The United States Department of State is a federal executive department responsible for carrying out U.S. foreign policy and international relations. Commonly referred to as The State Department, the headquarters in Washington DC houses thousands of foreign service, civil service, and local employees. Construction was completed in 1941 for the 10-story building which occupies a two-block area in the northwest section of Washington DC.
